HOUSING SUITABILITY

Data manifestation of Statistics Canada Shelter Cost to Income Ratio.

This manifestation is a 3D printed model representing housing suitability. Housing suitability is defined as having an adequate number of bedrooms for the number of people within the household. Within the model, each bar is representative of a province. They start from the back, moving along the curve to the front of the model in the order the info-card indicates. The black side of the model represents those who spend less than thirty (30) percent of their income on housing whereas the red side of the model represents those who spend more than thirty (30) percent of their income on housing. The interior area of each side is textured. This is to represent the non-suitable house within that province. The smooth area along the perimeter then represents suitable housing.

To properly experience and use this model the user must move their hands and fingers along the ringed outside. The user is encouraged to feel between each bar, to compare the textured area to the smooth, to feel the size and scale differences between each side. Focusing on the feel, texture and scale differences between each bar and side allows the user to understand the impact of the data. To help the user understand what they are feeling and seeing, there is an info card within the center that explains the provinces, income and textural meaning.
